Technical information

Detailed guidance on CCTV camera installation from our survey and installation team.

Overview

Most CCTV disappointments are not camera faults. They are design faults: too few cameras, the wrong lens, no light at night, or a recorder that only kept four days of footage when the incident is discovered on the tenth. MMB Technologies designs, supplies, installs and maintains CCTV systems that still produce usable evidence months after the handover.

Camera types and what each is for

BulletLong, narrow view with a visible deterrent effectBoundary walls, driveways, corridors, gates
DomeDiscreet, vandal resistant, wide coverageReceptions, shops, offices, lobbies
PTZPan, tilt and optical zoom under operator controlLarge yards, car parks, control rooms with staff
ANPRReads number plates reliably at speedEntry and exit lanes, toll points, society gates

Resolution, lens and night performance

Three decisions determine whether your footage identifies a person or merely shows that someone was there:

  • Resolution — 2 MP is adequate for general coverage; 4 MP to 8 MP where you need to identify faces or plates. More megapixels on a badly placed camera changes nothing.
  • Lens and distance — identification needs far more pixels per metre than simple detection. We calculate coverage per camera rather than guessing from a floor plan.
  • Night vision — infrared gives black-and-white images at a stated range; colour night vision needs a low-light sensor and some ambient light. We state the real usable range, not the catalogue maximum.

We supply Hikvision and Dahua as standard, including their ANPR and control-room ranges, and will work within your existing brand standard.

Recording and storage

  • NVR or DVR sized for the number of channels plus room to expand
  • Retention calculated for the period you actually need — 15, 30 or 90 days — not simply the largest drive on the shelf
  • Surveillance-grade hard disks, which are built for continuous writing; desktop drives fail early in this duty
  • RAID or dual recording where losing footage would be serious
  • Remote viewing on phone and desktop, with separate accounts and permissions per user
  • Smart detection: line crossing, intrusion zones, loitering and face capture, which cuts the time spent reviewing footage

Where we install

  • Houses, farmhouses and private residences
  • Housing societies, including gate, main road and park coverage
  • Shops, showrooms, plazas and shopping malls
  • Factories, warehouses and cold storage
  • Hospitals, schools, colleges and universities
  • Banks, petrol pumps and cash-handling sites

How we deliver a CCTV project

  1. Survey — we walk the site, identify what must be seen at each point, and check lighting at night as well as by day.
  2. Design — camera schedule with type, lens, mounting height, coverage and storage calculation.
  3. Cabling — Cat6 with proper containment, and a PoE power budget checked against the switch, not assumed.
  4. Installation and focusing — each camera aimed and focused on site, in daylight and after dark.
  5. Configuration — recording schedules, motion zones, user accounts and remote access.
  6. Training and handover — your staff shown how to search and export footage, with the admin password handed over in writing.
  7. Maintenance — periodic cleaning, refocusing, disk health checks and firmware updates.

What affects the price

  • Number of cameras and the resolution each location requires
  • Indoor or outdoor, and whether extra lighting is needed
  • Recording period, which drives disk capacity
  • Cable runs, containment and whether fibre is needed between buildings
  • ANPR, thermal or PTZ cameras, which cost several times a fixed camera
  • Whether a control room, video wall or network upgrade is included

FAQ

Common questions

How many days of recording will I get?

It depends on camera count, resolution, frame rate and disk size. We calculate it during the design and state the figure in the quotation, so you are not guessing after installation.

Can I watch my cameras on my phone?

Yes, on Android and iOS, over mobile data or wifi. We configure it during handover and create separate logins for staff with limited rights.

Will the cameras work in a power cut?

Only if the recorder, switch and cameras are on a UPS. We size a UPS for the required runtime; cameras without a backed-up recorder simply stop recording.

Can you add cameras to my existing system?

Usually yes, if the recorder has spare channels and the network can carry the load. We check both before quoting rather than after.

Analogue or IP?

IP for anything new: better resolution, smart detection and one cable for power and data. Analogue still makes sense when reusing existing coaxial cable in an older building.

Do you supply cameras to dealers?

Yes, on trade terms — see wholesale and dealer supply.
