Technical information

Detailed guidance on tensile shade structures from our survey and installation team.

Overview

A tensile structure covers a large area with very little steel, because the fabric itself carries the load in tension. Done properly it stays taut and dry for a decade or more. Done badly it ponds water, flaps in the wind and tears at the seams within two seasons — and the difference is engineering, not fabric price.

Where they are used

  • Car parking shades for plazas, offices, hospitals, showrooms and homes
  • Walkway canopies connecting buildings on campuses and in hospitals
  • Entrance canopies for hotels, banks and corporate receptions
  • Courtyard and seating covers for schools, mosques and restaurants
  • Playground and pool shades, where UV protection is the main purpose
  • Industrial covers for material storage and loading areas

MaterialCharacterTypical life
PVC-coated polyesterWaterproof, wide colour range, the usual choice for car parksRoughly 10–15 years

For car parking in Pakistan's climate, PVC-coated polyester is normally the right balance of cost, waterproofing and UV stability.

What matters in the engineering

  • Double curvature — every panel must curve in two directions, which is what keeps it taut and stops flapping
  • Drainage — fall designed so water runs off; ponding is the commonest cause of failure
  • Wind loading — masts, cables and foundations sized for local wind speeds, not copied from a catalogue
  • Foundations — concrete footings designed for uplift as well as downward load
  • Steelwork — hot-dip galvanised and powder coated for a long life outdoors
  • Edge cables and fittings — stainless steel, with tensioning that can be re-adjusted later
  • Welded seams — high-frequency welded rather than stitched, since stitching lets water through

How we deliver a project

  1. Site survey — area measured, soil and existing structures assessed, car park layout and bay count confirmed.
  2. Design — 3D form finding, structural calculation for wind and drainage, fabric cutting patterns produced.
  3. Approval — renders and layout shared so you can see the finished appearance before fabrication.
  4. Foundations — excavation, reinforcement and concrete with anchor bolts set to template.
  5. Fabrication — steelwork fabricated and galvanised; membrane welded in a controlled workshop.
  6. Erection and tensioning — steel erected, membrane lifted and tensioned evenly, which is the skilled part.

What affects the price

  • Covered area and the number of bays or spans
  • Fabric grade and expected service life
  • Cantilever or centre-post design — cantilevers keep bays clear but need larger foundations
  • Height clearance required for vehicles
  • Soil conditions, which determine foundation size
  • Steel finish, lighting, gutters and downpipes
  • Site access and whether work must be phased around operations

FAQ

Common questions

How long does a tensile shade last?

PVC-coated polyester typically gives ten to fifteen years in this climate; PTFE considerably longer. The steel structure lasts far longer than the fabric, so a re-skin later is straightforward.

Will it leak?

Not if it is welded and drained correctly. Leaks come from stitched seams, insufficient fall and ponding — all design failures rather than material failures.

Can it withstand storms?

Yes, when masts, cables and foundations are engineered for local wind speeds. We calculate this rather than reusing a standard drawing.

Can you match our building colours?

Yes. Membranes come in a wide colour range and steelwork is powder coated to your specification, including corporate colours.

Does it need maintenance?

Periodic cleaning and a tension check after the first season. Cables may need a small adjustment once as the membrane settles.

Can you cover an existing car park without closing it?

Yes. We phase foundations and erection row by row so most bays stay usable throughout.
