In depth

Technical information

Detailed guidance on sliding gate motors from our survey and installation team.

Overview

Sliding gates are the right choice wherever there is no room for a gate to swing inwards — short driveways, sloping approaches, and any entrance where vehicles queue close to the gate. The motor must be matched to the gate's weight, and the track and rack must be true, or no amount of power will make it run reliably.

Sizing the motor

Always specify above the measured weight, not at it. A motor running permanently at its limit is a motor that will be replaced early.

What a complete installation includes

  • Toothed rack, welded or bolted along the gate, correctly aligned with the pinion
  • Limit switches — magnetic or mechanical — setting the open and closed positions
  • Safety photocells that stop and reverse on obstruction
  • Flashing lamp and warning signage
  • Remote controls, and optionally keypad, RFID, intercom or app control
  • Soft start and stop, which reduces shock loading on the rack and rollers

Where we install

  • Houses, farmhouses and private driveways
  • Housing society main and side gates
  • Factories, mills and warehouses with heavy steel gates
  • Schools, colleges and hospitals
  • Petrol pumps, showrooms and commercial yards

Installation

  1. Survey — gate weight, length, track condition, roller wear and power supply checked.
  2. Track preparation — the gate must roll freely by hand before any motor is fitted.
  3. Foundation — concrete plinth cast for the operator, with conduit for cabling.
  4. Rack fitting — rack aligned to the pinion with the correct clearance; this step decides whether the gate runs quietly.
  5. Electrical work — supply, earthing and control wiring.
  6. Safety and limits — photocells aligned, obstruction force set, limits programmed.

What affects the price

  • Gate weight and length, which set the operator class
  • Whether the existing track, rollers and guides need repair first
  • Length of rack required
  • Civil work, cable distance and three-phase supply on industrial sites

FAQ

Common questions

How do I know my gate's weight?

We estimate it from the frame material, infill and dimensions during the survey. Guessing leads to an undersized motor, so we measure rather than assume.

Why is my existing gate noisy and jerky?

Almost always worn rollers, a misaligned rack, or a bent track — not the motor. Fixing the mechanics costs far less than replacing an operator that was never the problem.

Can the gate open automatically for residents?

Yes — long-range RFID tags on windscreens open the gate without the driver stopping, the same technology used on our road barriers.

Do you maintain gates you did not install?

Yes. We service most brands, stock common spares, and offer annual maintenance contracts covering track, rack, rollers and electronics.
