A wide leaf strains the motor more than a heavy narrow one — leverage works against it.

Detailed guidance on swing gate motors from our survey and installation team.
Overview
A swing gate operator turns a heavy manual gate into one that opens from the car. Fitted correctly it runs for years; fitted to a gate that is too heavy, hung badly or out of level, it burns out within months. The selection matters more than the brand.
Choosing the right operator
Two measurements decide everything: the weight of each leaf and its width. A wide leaf puts far more strain on the motor than a heavy but narrow one, because leverage works against it.
| Operator type | Suits | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Underground operator | Heavy ornamental gates | Invisible when closed; requires a drained foundation box |
What we supply with every installation
- Motor pair with control board, matched to leaf weight and width
- Safety photocells, which stop and reverse the gate if anything crosses its path
- Flashing lamp and warning signage so movement is obvious
- Remote controls, with additional handsets on request
- Soft start and soft stop, which extends the life of both gate and motor
Where swing automation works, and where it does not
Swing operators need space for the gate to open into. If your driveway slopes upward, or vehicles park close to the gate, a sliding gate motor is the better answer. We will tell you this at the survey rather than after installation.
- Houses, farmhouses and private driveways
- Housing society side gates and villa entrances
- Offices, clinics and small commercial premises
- Factory and warehouse gates, with industrial operators
Installation
- Survey — leaf weight and width measured, hinges and level checked, opening direction confirmed.
- Gate preparation — hinges serviced or replaced; an automated gate must swing freely by hand first.
- Mounting — brackets welded or bolted at the correct geometry, which determines whether the gate opens fully.
- Electrical work — supply, earthing and conduit to the control box.
- Safety devices — photocells aligned, force limits set so the gate stops on obstruction.
- Programming — limits, speed, remotes and any access devices configured.
What affects the price
- Leaf weight and width, which decide the operator class
- Any repair or rehanging the gate needs before automation
- Distance from the power supply and the amount of civil work
- Access devices: remotes only, or keypad, intercom, RFID or app control
FAQ
Common questions
My gate is heavy and drags. Can you still automate it?
Not until the gate is repaired. Hinges and level must be corrected first, otherwise the motor carries the weight the hinges should, and it fails early. We quote any repair separately and honestly.
Is it safe with children around?
With photocells and force limiting, yes. We fit both as standard and set the obstruction force during commissioning rather than leaving it at factory default.
Can I open the gate from my phone?
Yes, using a wifi or GSM module, which also lets you open the gate for a visitor while you are away.
Can you repair a motor someone else installed?
Yes. We service and repair most common brands, and will tell you plainly when a unit is worth repairing and when replacing it costs less over time.
